How and When to Water a Garden in the Baku Heat

Hot weather, dry winds and rapid evaporation increase the water needs of gardens in Baku and Absheron. However, giving more water is not always the answer. The goal is to water at the right time, direct moisture to the root zone and apply it slowly enough for the soil to absorb it.

What is the best time to water?

Water early in the morning, preferably between 5:00 and 8:00, before the soil heats up. Wind is usually lighter, evaporation is lower and wet foliage can dry during the day. If morning watering is not possible, water after sunset, usually after 20:00, and aim the water at the soil rather than the leaves. Avoid routine watering during the hottest hours.

Lawns, trees and flowers need different plans

Lawns

Deep watering is generally better than frequent surface wetting. Check whether moisture reaches the root layer. Manage sunny and shaded areas as separate zones to reduce patchy yellowing.

Trees and shrubs

Apply water across the root zone rather than directly against the trunk. Newly planted trees require closer monitoring; established plants are usually watered less often but more deeply. Do not allow water to remain around the trunk.

Flowers and containers

Drip irrigation keeps water near the roots. Containers dry faster than garden beds and should be checked daily, but drainage holes must remain open.

How to check soil moisture

Do not rely only on a dry surface. Check the soil 5–8 cm deep. If it is still cool and moist, watering can often wait. Sandy soil drains quickly, while clay soil retains water longer, so the schedule must reflect the actual site.

Common summer watering mistakes

  • Giving every plant the same amount of water;
  • Shallow watering in the middle of the day;
  • Running sprinklers in strong wind;
  • Ignoring leaks or blocked sprinkler heads;
  • Watering without checking drainage;
  • Piling mulch against the trunk.

A water-saving summer plan

A 5–7 cm organic mulch layer can reduce evaporation and keep the root zone cooler. Group irrigation zones by plant type and sun exposure. Keep timers, filters and moisture or rain sensors in working order.

When should you call a specialist?

If parts of the garden stay dry, the lawn yellows unevenly, pressure drops or puddles remain, the irrigation and drainage system should be inspected. The irrigation system installation and repair service can help identify leaks and set up suitable zones.

Frequently asked questions

Should a garden be watered every day in summer?

Not necessarily. Frequency depends on the soil, plant age, exposure and irrigation method.

Is evening watering harmful?

It can be used as an alternative if water is directed to the roots and foliage is not left wet overnight.

Can sprinklers run in strong wind?

Strong wind causes uneven distribution and water loss. Choose a calmer time.
